School Falls Silent For 'Drop Everything And Read'
The school celebrated World Book Day on Thursday 4th March by taking part in ‘Drop Everything and Read’ (DEAR), a 20 minute silence where everyone stops what they are doing to devote themselves to reading.
The idea for DEAR first came from a school librarian called Nikki Heath, who was School Librarian of the Year 2008, and lots of schools now take part on World Book Day.
Mrs Bastone, who organised the World Book Day events, was delighted with the response of students and staff alike: “As I walked round the school, EVERYONE was reading! In the classrooms, on the floor, at the office desks.
"Even students who initially didn't want to read enjoyed it - one reluctant reader said at the end, ‘That was lovely, I feel really nice and relaxed’. An extra bonus was that lots of pupils borrowed books from the LRC for the first time in their lives!”
