TV's Jonathan Hare visits LVS to find truth behind wacky movie science
TV’s Dr Jonathan Hare put Hollywood in the spotlight this week, as he visited LVS Ascot on Tuesday 2nd March and delivered the inaugural lecture in the school’s new series of public events.
Dr Hare, who is the presenter of ‘Rough Science’ on the BBC, challenged the science behind classic movies and stunts, and explained the truth about movies such as Speed, Die Hard and Fight Club.
The lecture was based on Dr Hare’s BBC/OU TV series Hollywood Science, where, armed only with basic tools, he put some of Hollywood’s famous stunts to the test by recreating them in his own back garden.
The audience of sixty plus students, parents and residents learned how they could create drinking water from urine, as was famously done in the movie Waterworld, and discovered that the famous bridge-jumping scene in Speed is simply impossible – and was done with the aid of digitally removed ramps.
Dr Hare is famous for bringing science out of the classroom and into real life, and his talk marks the beginning of a series of high profile LVS ‘STEM’ events - Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths.
The events will be open to all - students, families and local residents - so watch this space for the next exciting name to be announced.
