Year 5 – 6
In KS2, we aim to develop the skills learned previously and create opportunities for the children to become increasingly more independent and confident learners, supported through academic, sporting and co-curricular activities.
Children enter Year 5 & 6 with a solid grounding in all the main subject areas and continue to study all subjects of the National Curriculum delivered in the main by their class teacher:
In Years 5 and 6 pupils benefit from using the senior school science laboratories once a week for their practical science lessons. The majority of the foundation subjects are taught through our themed learning approach to the curriculum. This is an enquiry-based method of learning and ensures that all the subjects link together to allow for contextual learning to take place. Exceptions to these subjects are taught by specialist subject teachers enabling children to develop in preparation for their transition to Senior School at the end of Key Stage 2:
Pupils in Year 5 and 6 also undertake independent learning projects known in school as TED projects. This stands for Think, Explore, Discover and teaches the children time and project management skills as well as public speaking and presenting skills.
Years 5 and 6 are able to make full use of the superb, specialist subject facilities in the Senior School including the science labs, theatre and music department in addition to the Infant & Junior School vegetable & environmental gardens which facilitate hands-on learning in Science and other curriculum areas.
Our Upper KS2 children take part in a number of off-site trips each year and this culminates in week long residential trips to reinforce their Learning Values & Skills in the summer term. They also take part in charity fundraising activities and sponsored events.
As our Year 5 children transition into Year 6, they can take on positions of responsibility in the Infant & Junior School such as Head of School or Head of House. As they mature and become more confident, take more responsibility for themselves, their learning and personal organisation are supported by staff to prepare for the transition from the Infant & Junior School into the Senior School, so that they have a positive experience that ensures they feel ready, prepared and are looking forward to the move.
